Oral vs Written Communication

face-to-faceface-to-paper

Oral communication is a two-way street. We speak, others listen, they respond. Misunderstandings or matters requiring clarification are easily addressed and resolved. Smiles all around! Written communication, on the other hand, is very different. Whereas most people communicate successfully on a verbal level, many lack the ability to communicate well in writing.

Often, our inability to express ourselves well on paper goes back to our school days. English lit classes were boring! Essays were a waste of time! Who cares where the apostrophe goes! Science was much more interesting, wasn't it? What about history? Reading about ancient times was a lot more interesting than writing about them. Then again, what made reading about the ancient world interesting? Probably the way the story was told — in words! Sufficient to say that an accomplished writer grabs out attention in much the same way as a gifted story-teller.

My point? It's simple. If written communication is important in your daily life, due to your business, education or other reason, make sure it's given the importance it deserves. Doing so will help you achieve the results you want. There is no single 'best way' to express yourself in writing. Personal style is as varied as content. But, no matter how you present yourself on paper, make sure it flows and is error-free.
